Our slogan

Here is a lovely piece my good friend, Zen teacher and calligraphy sempai wrote for me. It is now our slogan.

It says (from right to left)

BUN TOKU BU KOU

BUN => character, word, literature TOKU => virtue, goodness
KOU => achievement

KYUU RYUU

KYUU => penetrate RYUU => dragon

AI KI
AI => to fit KI=> spirit, energy

BU DOU
BU=> martial, military DO=> path,way

KO KUU
Kokuu is the hanko - it means "void"

Altogether it means the combination of the virtues of literary education with accumulated martial success.

The above part in Gyosho style says - KyuRyu AikiBudo - That's me!!!

  2. I'm studying Japanese. I can make out maybe 1000 kanji if they're printed in a font. Grass style is tough to make out.

  3. You have to do calligraphy and understand strokes. It begins to make sense after that - sometimes.
